If you are looking for a Lunch and Learn topic for your office staff, consider our educational and experiential Meditation Session. We will discuss the benefits of utilizing meditation and self-care in everyday life while sharing resources. Often, we live life in absolutes. We find ourselves using words like, “always” and “never,” which puts limits on how we view our circumstances. If you find yourself using these words often, ask yourself, “But is it always like this?” “Do I really never get to?” When we live in absolutes, we are claiming that there is no exception. This mindset can sometimes limit our perspective which may cause fear, anxiety, upset, or failure. If we were to change our phrasing and add words such as “sometimes” or “it’s possible,” we create hope or potential for ourselves.
Living in the “grey” areas of our lives can offer an opportunity to see life from a different perspective. The definition of the grey area is, “an area or part of something existing between two extremes and having mixed characteristics of both” (www.dictionary.com). When we allow our thoughts to exist in the grey areas, we remove limits which help to promote positivity and to allow us to “be okay” and accept the situation.
Our words shape our perspective. One of my favorite bands in High School, Live, had a song titled the “Beauty of Grey.” I would sing these words at the top of my lungs, with the windows down: “This is not a black and white world To be alive I say the colors must swirl And I believe That maybe today We will all get to appreciate The beauty of gray” – LIVE. If you don’t know this song, I strongly encourage you to listen to it. And afterwards, pause to remember that life is full of uncertainty. However, it is through our own limits that we make it challenging. Give yourself the gift of possibility and embrace the beauty of grey.

We are bombarded by ads for products, practices, and publications that promise us how to “fix” what ails us. One of the first and most important steps we can take toward meeting our personal goals is to just begin enhancing our awareness. Such an action may sound easy and effortless and although it isn’t complicated, it takes practice, daily practice. Start by taking notice of when you engage in a certain behavior or emotion you would like to change. Just notice it; become aware of it; recognize it, and acknowledge it. The next step is to engage in awareness without judgment or negativity. One of the most difficult aspects of the practice of gaining awareness is not to assign a value judgment to the recognition. For example: “I am tired…I shouldn’t be tired I have been lazy all week.” The practice of awareness asks us to leave any judgments aside and just be. Therefore, I am tired. Period. Once we get into the habit of becoming more aware of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, we are in a great position to begin to analyze them, modify them, and even change them if we choose. Recently, I had an “AHA! moment”. At Radiant Counseling we believe that therapy is not just for mental health treatment due to difficult times in our lives. Although it is common practice for people to ask, “What kind of client’s do you see” and expect us to list of the diagnoses that we treat, the answer is always, we see EVERYBODY. Therapy can be a refresher, a check-in, a once in a while need to talk about your concerns. Think of it in terms of the things we do daily to calibrate ourselves. You eat a huge burger and fries for lunch; the next day you might need a salad. You stay up too late on the phone or reading a book; the following night you may want to get to bed early. It’s important to do the same for our thoughts and feelings. Too often we get “stuck” in our thought processes and need a little boost to change our perspective. One of the greatest stress relievers in this life is having the opportunity to unburden ourselves. Counseling is a gift we can give ourselves, a spa day for our hearts and minds. Let’s redefine common misconceptions about seeing a counselor to include monitoring our thoughts and emotions the same way we might our weight.
